First Impressions of Buchanan County

Jan 30, 2026

First Impressions is a program through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach that helps communities understand how they are perceived by first-time visitors. Throughout 2025, a team of visitors traveled to Independence and greater Buchanan County to experience our community firsthand and share honest feedback on what they saw, felt, and experienced.

Their observations highlight both our strengths and opportunities—from community pride and friendliness to areas where small improvements could enhance the visitor experience. This outside perspective provides valuable insight that can help guide future planning, tourism efforts, and community development.

Understanding how newcomers experience Buchanan County allows us to build on what we do well and thoughtfully address areas for growth.
